SHORT DESCRIPTION

Quick info about this sculpture

My ideas for this bench were all based on showcasing a contrast between wood against a base or block of colour. What emerged was a very Japanese look, or at least Eastern, with a very naked wood shape that looks elegant against the simple base.

Intentionally or not this bench looks very Japanese, or at least Eastern. My ideas for the bench were all based on how to show a contrast between wood and a base or block of colour . Originally it was supposed to be a matt lacquer, but it has actually ended up having several layers of 60/70% sheen lacquer, over the top of the black. Lacquer originated in Japan and they are certainly the masters of it. So simply by incorporating lacquer into a simple design it takes on a Japanese vibe. I look forward to repeating the process of using the warmth and organic form of wood, offset with block colours and smooth clean lines.
